(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 9/8/08) – On Tuesday, September 9, oral arguments will be heard in the case of a Muslim police officer (Webb v. City of Philadelphia) who is seeking to wear a religiously-mandated Islamic headscarf, or hijab, while on duty.

In January 2008, Philadelphia Police Officer Kimberlie Webb filed an appeal to a district court decision that barred her from wearing hijab while in her police uniform.
 
The Pennsylvania chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-PA), a signatory to an amicus brief that argued the trial court’s decision did not reflect current public safety uniform policies, is supporting Webb’s appeal for religious accommodation.
