On September 6, 2008, ADC Michigan participated in the Common Bond Institute (CBI)’s third annual conference, "Engaging the Other: The Power of Compassion,” at the San Mateo Marriott in San Francisco, California.
ADC Michigan Advisory Board member, Attorney Ihsan Alkhatib, participated in the four day conference and spoke on a panel entitled "Looking for The Enemy Within: Society and Paranoia." Alkhatib spoke about the current experiences of both Arab- Americans and Muslim-Americans in the aftermath of 9/11. Alkhatib discussed the backlash that is partly due to the political framing of the 9/11 attacks as a war between good and evil, with Islam injected into the labeling by both sides of the political debate. Mr. Alkhatib emphasized the importance of the involvement of non-Arab and non-Muslim Americans in combating prejudice and unjust policies. For more information about the conference or CBI, please visit Cbi World.
