Bahraini honor student Mohammed Ghazi Sulais represented Bahrain – and the Islamic and Arab world – at the World Space Week Youth Inspiration Project celebrated by NASA to commemorate its 50th anniversary.Image

At 18 years old, Sulais was the youngest of the nine students selected from around the world. The students, chosen on the basis of competitive interviews, academic excellence in math and science, and their career aspirations, experienced weightlessness on a zero gravity flight—an experience previously reserved for astronauts. Sulais has always shown a passion for space exploration and is interested in becoming an astronaut someday.

Sulais told the Bahrain News Agency (BNA) that the experience of floating in zero gravity conditions, chasing drops of water and candy, was unforgettable—but he was especially proud to have a chance to represent the Kingdom abroad. He wore logos representing Bahrain and sponsors of the event, and was acutely aware of his unique opportunity to teach others about Bahrain and project a positive image of Muslims, Arabs and Bahraini culture.

According to H.E. Bahrain Ambassador to the United States, Houda Nonoo, Mohammed has proven himself both a role model for students in the Kingdom and beyond, and a bona fide diplomat. She noted, “Despite his young age, he recognizes that such opportunities are not only an exciting reward for hard work, but a precious chance to give the world a glimpse of the dedicated, talented students and global citizens found in Bahrain. Bahrain is proud to be represented abroad by a student like Mohammed Sulais.”

The United Nations declared October 4-10 annually as World Space Week. The largest public space event on Earth, it is celebrated in some 50 nations.
