HomeNews Ramadan Greetings From The Muslim Public Affairs Council , President George Bush and Barack Obama
Tuesday, 02 September 2008
(Washington, DC - 9/2/08) -- The Muslim Public Affairs Council extends its wishes for a peaceful and blessed month of Ramadan to everyone. During this month, over 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide practice restraint and generosity as a reflection of their commitment to God and in fulfillment of the commandment of fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam.
Regarding Ramadan, the Quran states: "Fasting is ordained for you as it was ordained for those before you, so that you might remain conscious of God" (2:183). The month of Ramadan marks the revelation of the first verses of the Quran over 1400 years ago, and is typically marked by an increase in charitable giving.
In this blessed month, we pray that God blesses us all with an increased spirituality, a renewed hope in humanity, and a unwavering commitment to justice and truth.
President George Bush yesterday issued the following message to Muslim Americans on the occasion of Ramadan:
"I send greetings to Muslims observing Ramadan in America and around the globe. The holy month of Ramadan is a special time of prayer, fasting, and service. For Muslims, these days commemorate the revelation of God's word to the prophet Muhammad in the form of the Qur'an. I thank the men and women of the Muslim community for their contributions to America. Your love of family, and gratitude to God have strengthened the moral fabric of our country. Our Nation is stronger and more hopeful because of the generosity, talents, and compassion of our Muslim citizens. Laura and I send our best wishes. Ramadan Mubarak."
Similarly, Senator Barack Obama yesterday issued the following message on his website:
"Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, a special time for American Muslims. This is not only a month of fasting and prayer -- it is also a time to reflect on the needs of those who are less fortunate. In the weeks to come, Michelle and I want to wish all American Muslims our very best wishes. We hope Ramadan brings you happiness, good health, and a sense of renewal."
During the blessed month, we hope that you will consider offering your support for MPAC during this month, which qualifies as zakat (alms).
