Georgian Popescu, right, of Romania hits Sadam Ali of the U.S. during a men’s lightweight bout in Beijing on Monday. (AP/Rick Bowmer)Sadam Ali, a Brooklyn native and the first Arab-American boxer to compete in the Olympics, became the second United States boxer to suffer a first-round loss. He was considered a long shot to medal in the lightweight division, but the team was hoping for better than a 20-5 defeat Monday night to Romania’s Georgian Popescu.
There are six American boxers still alive, including three who have yet to box. The 20-year-old Ali, who grew up in Canarsie, is a two-time National Golden Glove champion.
