Friday, 01 August 2008
On July 28, 2008, envoy Houda Nonoo presented her credentials to be Bahrain Ambassador to the United States to The Honorable George W. Bush, President of the United States, and, on July 24, to The Honorable John D. Negroponte, United States Deputy Secretary of State.
Her Excellency conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Hamada Bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, along with his best wishes for continued peace, progress and prosperity to the American people. President Bush noted Bahrain’s commitment to peace and security and its help meeting the great international challenges of today.
Ms. Nonoo is, in many ways, a pioneer. She is Bahrain’s first non-Muslim ambassador. She is also the first Jewish woman to be appointed by an Arab country as ambassador to the United States, and she is only the third Bahraini woman ever to be appointed ambassador to any nation.
Her Excellency’s grandfather, Ibrahim Nonoo, represented the Jewish community in Bahrain's municipal council formed by the British authorities in 1934. And Ambassador Nonoo followed in the footsteps of her cousin, Ibrahim Nonoo, when she was appointed by His Majesty the King to the Shura (consultative) Council -- the upper chamber of parliament -- in 2006.
