Invited speakers include:
Lamia Abbas Imara - Lamea Abbas Amara is a leading Arab poet and former companion of Nazik Al Malaiika. She was born in Baghdad, Iraq Dec.5, 1929 and began writing poetry at the age of 15. She graduated from the Higher Teachers Training College with a BA in Literature in 1950 and became a teacher. She also worked in broadcasting at Radio Baghdad. In 1974 she was appointed as the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in Paris. The same year, she was appointed as vice president of the Iraqi Mission at UNESCO. In 1976 she headed the Art and Culture program at the University of Technology in Baghdad before retiring in 1977. She published seven books of poetry between 1960 and 1988. She is an advocate of women's rights in the Arab world and currently resides in San Diego.
Dr. Hussain Ali Mahfoudh - Prof. of Eastern Languages, Baghdad University.Graduated from High College of Teachers, Baghdad, and obtained PhD in Comparative Literature. He held many academic posts including Prof. of comparative literature, Leningrad (St. Petersburg) University. He is the leading Iraqi Prof. in academia and literature. He is an active member of many distinguished scientific associations and academies. Awarded many international and national awards for the achievements he made over the years. He is a leader and scholar in Arabic, Persian, Latin, Turkish languages, music heritage, Arab script, medical heritage, religion, and above all is a distinguished poet. He has written over 1500 works in books, articles, reviews, translations critiques, lectures and other lines.
Dr. Abdelelah Assayegh - Dr. Abdulelah Assayegh has over 25 years experience teaching classic Arabic literature. He is currently a professor at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn Michigan. He has taught at various institutions throughout Europe and the Arab world. He obtained his doctorate in 1985 from Al-Muntasiriya University in Baghdad. His presentation will be entitled:
"Nazik Al Malaika and the Renewal of Modern Arabic Poetry" (in Arabic)
Please note that presentations will be made both in Arabic and English; there will be NO
simultaneous translation.
