The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) and the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) were presented awards recognizing “Outstanding and Dedicated Service” for their training efforts with the Washington, DC, Metro Police Department from March 2007 through March 2008. Members from each organization successfully conducted one year in-service training session with an estimated 3,000 officers. These seminars covered Arab cultural awareness and the Muslim and Sikh faiths, demystified the communities, and help law enforcement better understand and work with the communities. The training sessions also taught methods of outreach and ways to better interact with said communities.

Under the leadership of Nawar Shora, ADC’s Diversity Education and Law Enforcement Outreach Program has reached an estimated 15,000 individuals as part of in-person training seminars that have included interfaith groups, churches, law enforcement (local, state, and federal), and the private sector. Additionally, through intranet and DVD channels, more than 200,000 individuals have been reached over the past seven years.

The Metro Police Department awarded the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee’s Legal Director Nawar Shora the plaque for his unyielding efforts and accomplishments throughout the training process, including a similar year-long project in 2003. SALDEF’s National Director Rajbir Datta also received a plaque for his year-long dedication to the education process at the Metro Police Department’s Training Academy and his selfless work, week in and week out. The ceremony was held at the ADC National Headquarters with guests that included coalition partners from the civil rights community and leadership from the federal government and law enforcement.
