As an Arab American and an arts correspondent for National Public Radio, Neda Ulaby has a unique perspective on the character known as The Sheik. Earlier this year, she reported on The Sheik, who first emerged in a 1919 novel and then gave birth to the common stereotype as well as Hollywood’s first male sex symbol. Click HERE to listen to the piece, which features media critic and author Dr. Jack Shaheen (Reel Bad Arabs, Guilty: Hollywood’s Verdict on Arab Americans After 9/11) and to view a video clip of Ulaby sharing her own reactions to The Sheik.
