American Arab Chamber of Commerce Helps Companies Reach Out to Arab Americans PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2007
Dearborn, MI (April 30, 2007) - The American Arab Chamber of Commerce has been recognized by the New York Times for being a leader in helping companies with a new and important endeavor: advertising for Muslim-Americans.
AACC conducts a Corporate Cultural Diversity Training, to help companies understand and reach out to the Arab-American, Muslim, and Chaldean communities in culturally appropriate ways. The Chamber’s program is funded in part by a grant from the Comcast Foundation.
The New York Times wrote the story with a focus on companies in the Detroit area, where there is a dense population of Muslims that are leading the change in advertising.
From the New York Times:
-----------
For years, few advertisers in the United States have dared to reach out to Muslims.
Either they did not see much potential for sales or they feared a political backlash. And there were practical reasons: American Muslims come from so many ethnic backgrounds that their only common ground is their religion, a subject most marketers avoid.
That is beginning to change. Consumer companies and advertising executives are focusing on ways to use the cultural aspects of the Muslim religion to help sell their products. “United States companies don’t want to risk alienating their domestic consumers,” said Nasser Beydoun, Chairman of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce in Dearborn.
-----------
The AACC's diversity training is unique in that it is designed specifically for businesses who are hoping to integrate Arab Americans into their company as customers, employees, and as part of the larger community. The program concentrates on how organizations can use cultural knowledge to become better corporate citizens and in turn experience loyalty and patronage from the large Arab American community in the area.
The New York Times covered the most recent session of the AACC’s program conducted for IKEA in Canton, Michigan. A video clip that covers the IKEA diversity training can be found at:
