Detroit is home to one of the largest, most diverse Arab communities outside the Middle East. Arab Americans living here number nearly 200,000, having begun their immigration more than a century ago. The blanket term 'Arab American' is used to indicate Detroit area immigrants (and their children) from the countries of the Arab League, which includes such a wide diversity of cultures, from Morocco to Qatar, Iraq to Yemen, Lebanon to Egypt, that the highly complex story cannot be downplayed by assuming that all Detroit Arab Americans follow the same customs, celebrate the same holidays, follow the same religion or even speak the same language.
"I am ever so confident that we will showcase the Arab American people of metro Detroit and Michigan the way they should be portrayed. It is not difficult since starting this project. I have had the opportunity to have met many leaders in our community from many levels that I had no idea who were Arab American," says Keith Famie, Executive Producer/Director, Visionalist Entertainment Productions.
Our Arab American Story is produced with support from local businesses and community organizations. Contributions are needed for the completion of the project. If you are interested in providing help in the telling of the story of the Arab community, please send an e-mail to bill@ourstoryof.com or famie@famie.com.
