Ambassador Afief Safieh will be the keynote speaker at the HCEF Awards Banquet on Friday, Oct. 26. The focus of his address: "Current Peace Initiatives in the Middle East". Dr. Marwan Muasher, the Senior Vice President for External Affairs of the World Bank, will be receiving the first "Path of Peace" Award.  Dr. Muasher, a distinguished Jordanian public servant, will be recognized for his "significant contributions to peace in the Middle East,"
Reverend Siler will give the keynote address of the Conference on Saturday, Oct. 27. His address is entitled: "A Message of Peace from Jerusalem."
HCEF President Rateb Rabie commenting on the two speakers stated "Reverend Siler and Ambassador Safieh have been deeply committed champions for the cause of peace in the Middle East for a very long time. Each in his respective role, in the religious and diplomatic arena, has labored long and hard to advance reconciliation among Christians, Muslims and Jews. We are delighted that these two highly respected leaders will address the conference."
Reverend Siler is the Pastor of the English- speaking congregation of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem. Since 2003 he has also served as the Assistant to the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. His pastoral duties have given him deep insights into the faith communities in the Holy Land. These he will share with the conference participants.
Ambassador Afief Safieh, Head of the PLO Mission in Washington, D.C., is a native of Jerusalem educated at the Christian Brothers College there. Later he received a degree in Political and International Relations from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University. He served on the Board of the University of Bethlehem. He was the Palestinian General Delegate (Ambassador) to the Vatican before his current diplomatic posting in Washington.
The Conference Awards Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 26 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel and Conference Center, 6701 Marinelli Rd., North Bethesda, MD 20852 (near the White Flint Metro).
