The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) welcomes the latest book, "Swimming Up the Tigris: Real Life Encounters in Iraq," by Barbara Nimri Aziz, PhD. Ms. Aziz, a longtime supporter of ADC and mentor to many Arab Americans, will be holding a book reading and signing this on October 4, 1pm, at the ICC Building Room 241 at Georgetown University.
"Swimming Up the Tigris" provides a unique glimpse into the horrors of the embargo years and the first days of the invasion. She has an uncommon vantage point, as a journalist, anthropologist, and Arab woman. As a freelance journalist, Aziz exposes the mainstream media's failure to cover the embargo, an unprecedented story that even today has many implications for the current conflict. As a social anthropologist, Aziz examines every aspect of Iraqi culture that has been systematically attacked and destroyed by the embargo and the invasion. As an Arab, she understands the extraordinary will of the Iraqi people and the deep-rooted love for their country.
Barbara Nimri Aziz, a freelance journalist, has a PhD in Social Anthropology at SOAS, University of London, UK and worked for two decades in her initial fields of expertise -- Tibet and Nepal. In 1989 Aziz took up journalism, focusing on Iraq, again publishing widely from her observations in Iraq and neighboring countries. In 1972 she founded the Radius of Arab American Writers Inc. and was its director until 2005. Dr. Aziz continues to work as a freelance scholar and writer, also hosting a weekly radio program, 'Tahrir' Voices of the Arab/Muslim Community Here and Abroad.' Her many awards include grants from The American Philosophical Society, Wenner Gren Foundation, National Geographic, NEH, NSF, SSRC, SSRC-UK, and most recently, Fulbright Scholarship for 2007-2008.
