Mizna - Call for Submissions: Family Matters PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 15 September 2007
(deadline—September 30, 2007)
As humans we all seek it—the comfort and stability of a committed relationship. And to follow, for many of us, the closest thing to immortality we can achieve: progeny. But all is not always the bliss it would seem. The journey, along with the expected joys and accomplishments, can also be fraught with obstacles, frustrations, and unfulfillment. The destination can be bliss or anguish, or something in between.
Mizna challenges its readers to explore, through fiction or nonfiction, the multifaceted experience of relationships and family matters, traditional or otherwise. We challenge you particularly to delve into the murky and more nuanced aspects, including the search for a partner, loneliness/boredom within or without a relationship, infidelity, pregnancy woes, infertility, abortion, parenting difficulties, sibling squabbles, loss of a loved one through separation or death. Please submit writing on this theme by September 30, 2007. Submissions that do not fit this theme will be considered for future issues and can be submitted at any time.
Mizna is a journal of Arab-American literature. We welcome submissions of prose, poetry, and art that reflect the diversity of our community. Contributors do not have to be of Arab descent provided their work is of relevance to the Arab-American community.
If you would like your work to be considered for publication, please send your submission and a brief biography (maximum 50 words) via e-mail as attachments (not in the body of the message) to mizna@mizna.org and include the word “submission” in the subject line. The attachments should be standard word-processing files. Please include your name, mailing address, e-mail address, and phone number. Please do not send hard copies.
Prose should be double-spaced and limited to 2500 words. Kindly limit poetry submissions to four poems per submission. Verses exceeding our page width will be treated with a runover indent. Proofs can be made available for author approval before publication.
Writers whose work is published in Mizna will receive a stipend and complimentary copies of the journal.
Due to the volume of submissions received, those not conforming to the above guidelines, as well as material previously published in any other English-language forum, will not be considered.
