Election of the new
President of the Lebanese Republic
HE President Michel Sleiman
On Sunday, May 25, 2008, General Michel Sleiman was elected and
sworn in as the 12th President of the
Lebanese Republic.
After a
long-standing crisis that polarized the Lebanese
political spectrum, General Michel Slieman emerged
as a consensus candidate, acceptable to all sides.
His military achievements, as Commander-in-Chief of
the army, entrusted him with the respect and
confidence of all internal parties, the Arab
countries and the international community. His
election with a majority of 118 votes out of 127 and
the attendance of his election by more than 50
foreign leaders reflect this international and
nationwide support.

Interview with Ambassador
Antoine Chedid to the Washington Diplomat
In an interview to the Washington
Diplomat, July 2008, Ambassador Chedid "This embassy
represents all Lebanese people, regardless of their
political affiliation."
After six months without a
president, Lebanon finally got one: Michel Suleiman.
And after a year without a credentialed ambassador
in Washington, Lebanon finally has one of those too:
Antoine Chedid.
It's no coincidence that Chedid — who has
effectively headed the Lebanese Embassy here for one
year — presented his credentials to President Bush
on June 6, not even two weeks after Suleiman was
sworn into office.
